Inspired by the city’s design heritage, the first Design Miami LA will run from May 16 to 20, and is one of the major announcements in this pivotal year, which marks the 20th anniversary since its first flagship fair launched in Miami. Ten years later, just after West Hollywood was officially born — and inherited the Blue Whale as one of its few landmarks — Pelli was commissioned to add the final two buildings to the site. But many were unprepared for what architect Cesar Pelli had in mind for a swath of land at the corner of Melrose Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood that once housed a Pacific Electric railway facility. Rising from the center of what used to be a low-scale residential and commercial area of West Hollywood, the Pacific Design Center is an enormous, and enormously colorful, landmark both beloved and reviled by its neighbors.

It starts with a reception area ex­pansive enough that a round desk in walnut and granite, structural columns wrapped in boxwood, and armchairs upholstered in deep red leather, all hefty items, barely interrupt the marble floor—two-tone again but with contrasting strips, not rings. Beyond an oval glassed-in conference room, runs of workstations in exotic woods are punctuated by panels of crimson glass. Cohen’s own office, at the very tip, offers a movie-worthy panorama from the Hollywood Hills to downtown L.A.

Coupled with the Blue Building’s massive scale is its boldly colored, hermetic skin of bright blue opaque glass, all 4.5 acres of it completely covering the exterior walls. The building’s vast, blue, almost scale-less presence is not unlike the atmosphere itself, with which it interfaces.
